Iraq will only succeed when industry and for domestic consumers are able to rely on a reliable and consistent electricity supply. Right now that prospect is in the future. Blackouts are commonplace and the creaking grid fails frequently. A large part of the electricity supply is imported from outside the country. There is an urgent need for robust generation and distribution. It is a government and business priority.

There is a demand for innovation – for local and community generated power and for technologies not yet in use. Solar power has been limited to street lighting - a big expansion of solar is now planned. Similarly wind power is new to the country, as is the exploration of biomass, hydro, and geothermal tech. And natural gas, responsibly employed, could provide a substantial indigenous feedstock.

There is now an extraordinary opportunity to rebuild. Generation and distribution, switchgear, IT and control systems will all be in demand. Opportunities are arising in design, in manufacture, installation, in construction and commissioning and in a future of on-going energy management and marketing partnerships.
